Dr. Betty Woo: Lecture-Recital "Student Pieces by Underrepresented American Composers"

  • St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Palo Alto (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The lecture-recital aims to introduce piano teachers to lesser-known, high-quality works by living American composers, particularly those from African American, Asian American, and Latin American backgrounds. The selected pieces, ranging from intermediate to advanced levels, were composed within the last 50 years and reflect a wide variety of styles and moods, from folk and jazz-inspired to romantic, minimalistic, and programmatic. All works are available for purchase in print or digital form, and the presentation will include composer and piece information via PowerPoint.

Lecturer’s Bio:
Dr. Betty Woo, a distinguished pianist, holds a D.M.A. from Stanford University and an Artist Diploma with the MacFarren Gold Medal from the Royal Academy of Music in London. She has performed internationally, received top awards at major competitions, collaborated with renowned ensembles and dance companies, and participated in prestigious festivals worldwide. An accomplished educator, she has taught at Holy Names University, the San Francisco Conservatory, and currently teaches at UC Berkeley.
